🪾 Surviving the Drought - Regenerative Livestock Nutrition & Grazing Management - How to S5E7 🌱

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to the How to do it series. Today, we have a special treat. We are out on location at Mt Dillon, near Stanthorpe, Queensland, visiting the farm of my wonderful partner, Claudia. This region presents a massive, distinct agricultural challenge: highly deficient, sandy soils with almost no inherent nutrients. In fact, comprehensive soil tests here revealed some of the lowest mineral counts I have ever seen in my career. Yet by adopting the core principles of Nutrition Farming®, Claudia has built a resilient livestock operation amid severe drought conditions.

In this episode, we explore the profound connection between the soil, the plant, and the animal. When a landscape is highly depleted, it naturally gives rise to indicator weeds like lovegrass and fireweed. Instead of entering an expensive, chemically intensive war against nature, Claudia shows us how to respond with ecological intelligence. By utilising adaptive cell grazing, free-choice mineral trailers, and biological tools, she has unlocked a 100% fertility rate in her herd without applying a single chemical drench or synthetic pesticide.

You’ll also discover:

  • Breed Selection: Why choosing smaller, landscape-appropriate breeds like Dexter cattle reduces structural soil impact and thrives on rougher, woody forage compared to massive European breeds like Simmentals.
  • Chemical-Free Fly Control: How the abrasive, razor-like structure of silica-based diatomaceous earth inside a "Boss Bag" back rubber mechanically disrupts livestock flies.
  • Goats as Weed Managers: The tactical use of goats to target fireweed blooms, successfully stopping the weed from seeding without using chemical sprays.
  • The Solar Panel Effect: Why cell grazing must respect the rule of leaving at least four inches of pasture leaf to prevent root self-pruning and preserve soil biological energy.
  • Kelp and Methane: The multi-faceted power of ocean kelp to deliver 74 macro- and micro-minerals, provide essential iodine for thyroid efficiency, and naturally reduce enteric methane emissions.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did making it!

Warm regards,
