Welcome back to our "How to Do It" series. Today, we are discussing what I consider the most important player in the nutrition department: the microbes. While we often talk about the interplay between minerals, microbes, and humus, it is now clear that microbes rule the system.

In this episode, we compare compost teas to compost extracts. While compost teas can be useful, they are essentially a breeding experiment that favours oxygen-loving organisms, often narrowing thousands of species down to just a handful.

Compost extracts, however, provide a direct representation of the mother compost. By using high-pressure water to "beat" the microorganisms off the organic matter, we capture a full spectrum of fungi, aerobes, facultative anaerobes, actinomycetes, and protozoa.

Testing the Workforce

You wouldn't hire a crew without checking their credentials, and the same applies to your compost. We demonstrate the use of the Microbiometer, a fantastic tool that measures total microbial biomass and the all-important fungi-to-bacteria ratio.
