Welcome back to Season 2 of the How to Do It’ video series. This week features Part 2 of our experiment, where we allow you to eavesdrop upon my Zoom consultation with Guner Tautrim. Guner graciously agreed to allow this sharing in the hope that it might prove of value to fellow farmers.

I referred to Guner, in Part 1, as a 3rd generation family farmer, but I have since learned that this is incorrect. Orella Ranch has been in his family for 7 generations. In fact his father and his two sons currently work with him on the farm. I was also a little misguided in suggesting that he had never conducted soil tests. Guner has tested the soil previously, but his focus has always been on microbes rather than minerals.

In Part 2 of this consult we consider core Nutrition Farming concepts, like “putting the microbes behind the minerals”. We detail the rationale behind choosing chicken manure as a fertiliser, and how we can optimise the performance of this underrated, inexpensive input. We discuss the benefits of BAM and techniques to multiply and best utilise this popular inoculum.

I share relevant DIY foliar recipes in this episode, highlighting the double barreled potential of potassium sulphate as a foliar spray. We also discuss the rationale behind cell grazing (or “intelligent grazing”, as I call it). In this wide ranging conversation, we also cover the roles of beneficial anaerobes and sulphur the missing mineral that can be so important in plant resilience.
