Chelation Elation - Magnify your Nutrition Inputs - Ep1 - How-to Series 3

Hi Everyone,

Hi everyone, Welcome back to the first episode of Season 3 of the “How To Do It” video series. We have some great treats in store for you for the upcoming season, but we will begin with a discussion of strategies to enhance nutrient delivery.

The word “chelation” means “claw” in Greek. When we apply minerals via foliar or soil delivery, the uptake of positively charged minerals (cations) can be compromised due to their reaction with the strongly negatively charged plant surface. On the leaf surface, in particular, there can be a nail-to-a-magnet rush, which often results in a traffic jam clogging the tiny entry points(the stomates) into the leaf. Chelation involves wrapping a biochemical claw around that cation, neutralizing the positive charge, and facilitating a much more efficient uptake of applied nutrition.

The chemical option for chelation involves a patented chemical called EDTA. There is a problem here in that EDTA is now considered to be a POP(persistent, Organic Pollutant). It accumulates in our soils with detrimental effects, including the following:

1) Mobilizing toxins

  • EDTA strongly chelates metals like lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.
  • This can mobilize toxic heavy metals in soils and sediments, increasing their bioavailability and leaching risk into water systems.
  • In aquatic systems, this can lead to increased toxicity to microorganisms and aquatic life.

2) Interference with Nutrient Cycling

  • By chelating essential trace elements (like iron, manganese, and zinc), EDTA can disrupt natural microbial processes in soil and water, including nitrification and phosphorus cycling.

3) Toxic By-products

  • While EDTA itself is considered low in acute toxicity, it can form toxic byproducts when it reacts with chlorinated compounds or is exposed to radiation/UV.
  • Some of these degradation products may be mutagenic or carcinogenic.

I guess you are now wondering about better alternatives. This episode will focus on those superior natural options, including more cost-effective DIY solutions like fulvic acid, kelp and amino acids.

We will also discuss an amino acid breakthrough called Micro Amino Drive (MAD), which is really something special. These amino acids are created by a unique group of bacteria that feed on tree bark. They use cellulose and hemicellulose to produce a diverse range of minuscule amino acids. In fact, these amino acids are 24 times smaller than conventional amino acids.

This means they can attach to minerals and smuggle them into the plant much more efficiently. It has always been recognised that glycine, the smallest of the conventional amino acids, is by far the best chelating agent. However, MAD can provide a similar rapid delivery at a fraction of the costs. Our research trials have revealed amazing plant health and vigour associated with treatment with Micro Amino Drive (MAD), as amino acids are required for every plant process.

I trust you will all discover the potential of DIY chelation from this presentation.

Wishing you every success on your Nutrition Farming journey

Did you know that government subsidies are available for farmers via the Farm Household Allowance. Check it out here... https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/farm-household-allowance

Our last course was attended by growers and consultants from six countries. It was a wonderful learning opportunity where attendees enjoyed a wealth of education and inspiration from both our presenters and their fellow attendees. We only accept 40 bookings for these courses, so please register if you would like to attend.
