🌱 The Invisible Pulse: Understanding Redox in the Soil - How to S5E1 ⛰️
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to the first episode of Season 5 of our "How to Do It" series! We are standing here at Nutrition Farms in Applethorpe, surrounded by our Red Delicious apples. We kept these trees when others pulled them out, and they’ve rewarded us with the highest antioxidant levels of any apple. But there is a secret to that vitality, and it involves a concept that is the very essence of Nutrition Farming and life itself: Redox.
Many of you have seen an "inexplicable" lack of performance in your crops. You look at your soil test, everything seems right, you’re tipping on more fertilizer, yet the response is patchy or non-existent. This is often a Redox issue. Redox, or reduction-oxidation, represents the electrical life of your soil, plants, and microbes. It is all about the movement of electrons, and at the heart of this movement is Oxygen.
In this session, we discuss how the soil must "breathe" to function. When oxygen is restricted—through compaction or waterlogging—the "Redox" collapses. Microbes, desperate for oxygen, will actually steal it from your nitrate nitrogen, turning your expensive fertiliser into gas that disappears into the atmosphere. Even more concerning, under-oxygenated soils turn iron into a "super-available" but toxic form (Fe2), flooding the plant and shutting down other essential minerals.
You’ll also discover:
- The Cal-Mag Ratio: Why a 1:1 ratio on clay soils leads to a "closed" system that cannot breathe.
- The Fungi Factor: Why a 1:1 fungi-to-bacteria ratio is essential for creating the soil aggregates that facilitate gas exchange.
- The Sandy Soil Struggle: How over-oxidation in sands "burns" organic matter and how to slow that process down.
- Redox Buffers: The powerful role of Basalt and Humates (Humic and Fulvic acid) in preventing the rapid spikes and drops that hurt production.
Featured Solutions Mentioned in This Episode:
- NTS Gyp-Life Organic: A micronised, high-surface-area "clay breaker" that can be delivered directly into the rhizosphere via fertigation.
- NTS FulvX: A 100% soluble blend of Humic and Fulvic acids, designed for maximum compatibility and Redox buffering.
- Basalt: An inexpensive tool to boost Electron Exchange Capacity (EEC) and stabilise the soil engine.

NTS Soluble Humate Granules™
This high-quality leonardite outperforms competing products.
These granules are ideally suited for addition with granular fertilisers, but they can also be readily dissolved to make a liquid that can be added to dissolved urea. The solubility of these granules facilitates successful fusion with fast-release fertilisers, which is particularly important for reducing the lock-up rate of dry-applied soluble phosphate sources, stabilising urea, chelating and complexing minerals, and buffering high sodium and heavy metal levels.
Key Performance
- Humic acid is a powerful fungi promotant.
- Stabilise nitrogen and improve nitrogen efficiency (ideal as an additive with urea).
- Promotes root growth.

Nutri-Life BAM™
Multipurpose blend of anaerobic species for soil, compost and plant health.
This breakthrough probiotic blend contains lactic acid bacteria and purple non-sulphur bacteria, plus beneficial yeasts and microbial exudates.

Certificate in Nutrition Farming

Our next iconic, five-day Certificate in Nutrition Farming® course is scheduled for Monday, 23rd - 27th March 2026.
Our last course was attended by growers and consultants from six countries. It was a wonderful learning opportunity where attendees enjoyed a wealth of education and inspiration from both our presenters and their fellow attendees. We only accept 40 bookings for these courses, so please register if you would like to attend.
