How to Do It Series - Episode 6 - Soil Testing

Hi Everyone,

In this latest video presentation, we will highlight the importance of soil testing and teach you how best to collect soil test samples.

Soil testing is an absolutely essential component of Nutrition Farming. It provides the framework for productive precision in your crop nutrition.

It is always important to recognise that no mineral is an island. Each mineral impacts several other minerals, either positively or negatively. The reason that we favour calcium as the first correction in a mineral balancing program is that calcium directly enhances the plant's availability of seven other minerals. This hugely important “trucker” of minerals is a prime example of “the Goldilocks principle,” the “just right” effect.

If you provide more calcium than your particular clay chemistry can comfortably accommodate, then over-application can become more destructive than not liming at all. That excess calcium can antagonise the uptake of the same seven minerals it would otherwise stimulate.

Similarly, high phosphate can shut down zinc; high potassium can affect the uptake of calcium and magnesium, and, importantly, a nitrogen oversupply shuts down potassium, calcium and boron.

Growing without testing is like driving down a highway with a blindfold. Driving blind is not the way to maximise productivity and minimise pest pressure.

Hopefully, once you understand how best to conduct a soil test, you will be motivated to test your soil.

Sometimes, farmers argue that they don’t have the budget to correct mineral imbalances, but it’s important to realise that there are less expensive options. If you know what you need, you can provide small amounts of the required minerals in liquid injection (in broadacre) or via fertigation in horticulture. In both situations, the soil test also provides the basis of inexpensive foliar correctives that will be much more productive when they are formulated based on exact requirements rather than guesswork.

Wishing you productive soil testing, as the spring season approaches.

Warm regards,

Monitoring Meters & Equipment

Crop Monitoring is a critically important strategy in high production agriculture. In-field monitoring tools offer the grower immediate feedback which in turn allows rapid response to any problem identified. This enhanced response capacity can make a tremendous difference to the bottom line.
