How to Do It Series 2 - Episode 8 - NTS Home Garden Range
Hi Everyone,
Welcome back to the latest “How To Do It” video. This installment features a product focus, as there have been many requests for information on how and why our key products work, additionally it is a valuable showcase of value adding in your farming business.
We filmed this at the wonderful organic farmers markets at Stanthorpe on Saturday mornings. This has become a buzzing little community hub each week and I love being a part of it.
I have long argued that the well managed home vegetable garden is the ultimate wellness tool. Not only are you eating chemical free, nutrient-dense food and savoring the satisfaction that oozes from that enterprise, but there are other wellness enhancing benefits. These include:
1) Mental Health - we now understand that the smell of a healthy soil triggers the production of serotonin, the feel good hormone. Depression is linked to a lack of this hormone. There are very few depressed gardeners.
2) Probiotic support - a common bacillus organism (bacillus subtilis), found in healthy soil, has been shown to be a super protective probiotic. In fact, there is a whole new form of probiotic supplementation, based on this finding, called “spore biotics”. It’s a good reason to leave a little soil on that freshly plucked carrot.
3) Countering climate change - when we build organic matter in our gardens, we are sequestering carbon that would otherwise have returned to the atmosphere, as part of the carbon cycle. When you factor in the potential of every gardener on the planet sequestering carbon in this manner, you begin to realise your critically important role as a cog in that planet saving machine..
4) Personal food security - at some point in the not too distant future a food crisis is inevitable. A perfect storm of climate extremes, economic non viability and damaged soils will ensure this outcome. If you have not yet learned how to grow the food for yourself and your family, then it’s time to address that oversight.
5) All important exercise - in a time starved world, many of us struggle to gain enough aerobic and resistance exercise. There are very few overweight gardeners.
6) Champagne food - one of the biggest benefits of home grown food is the opportunity to harvest it immediately before it is eaten. There is a profound loss of nutrition post harvest. A snow pea, for example, loses 50% of its vitamin C content within 12 hours of harvest. You can enjoy fresh produce at its champagne best when it can be consumed immediately after harvest. You will experience that fresh food at its best, with forgotten flavours and greater medicinal qualities.
Beginning your journey
Often the greatest deterrent for non gardeners wanting to harvest these many benefits, is the fact that they have no experience. That initial passion is soon dampened, if you produce spindly, substandard plants that attract insects and disease. We have produced “The Life-Force Gardening Guide”, to help ensure immediate success in home food production with a simple 3 step program. I have attached a copy here in the hope that your results will match your enthusiasm, should you decide to grow your own food.
I trust there will be something of value here. We all should have a vegetable garden, even the most busy of farmers.
Happy Nutrition Gardening!
Warm regards,
