How to Do It Series 2 - Episode 12 - Online Consultation - Putting the Minerals behind the Microbes - Part 1

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to series 2 of the popular “How To Do It” video series.

This week we thought we might offer you something a little different, to enhance your ongoing educational empowerment. Some of you may be aware of my 60 minute Zoom consults, where growers across the globe book a problem-solving session with me and we discuss their goals and issues. Typically, they will send me some soil and leaf tests before the Zoom meeting, so that my advice can be better informed. Commonly, farmers will comment that they feel they have reclaimed the cost of the consultation just five minutes into the meeting.

I have been thinking that the information in these sessions would often be of value to many people. One of my consults earlier this month with Guner Tautrim, from California, addressed a common problem in the regenerative approach. I asked Guner if he would allow us to share this interchange. Guner  graciously responded with the statement, “Please feel free to share it far and wide. We all need this kind of information”.

So in this two-part, sharing we will replay the Zoom consult for any of you who might gain some value. I figure it would be helpful if you had some background information, so I have included Gunner’s soil test, my initial written recommendations and some aerial photos of his coastal farm.

Here is the scenario: This is a precious third generation family farm and Guner is intent on improving the soils during his stewardship. He has attended multiple training sessions with all of the key players in the soil life story. These include cell grazing courses, soil foodweb seminars, workshops teaching contour farming principles and seminars sharing various other strategies related to improving both microbial diversity and soil humus. He has put many of these principles into practice but has seen only minor measurable improvement in crop vigour and/or productivity.

In our initial email contact he shared his disappointment, and I asked to see his soil test results.

He had never conducted a soil test so I organised some good tests via my consultant account with the leading US Lab, Brookside Laboratories, started by the world renown William Albrecht. These tests immediately explained his lack of yield response and they highlighted a key principle in high production Nutrition Farming. Soil health involves a three-part equation. This trio includes minerals, microbes and humus. Guner had very ably addressed two legs of the three legged stool but had completely overlooked minerals - and the stool toppled.

I trust  that this sharing will illustrate the essential need to address the full story when striving to improve soil fertility.

I trust you will enjoy eavesdropping on this conversation and for some of you it may prove to be a game changing realization. Thanks for your generosity Guner!

Happy Nutrition Farming!

Warm regards,

Graeme Sait
