Gold from the Vaults - Jerry Brunetti - Soil & Livestock Health - The Rumen is an Ecosystem - Ep 9 🐂

Hi Everyone,

As we wrap up Series 4 of our 'How to do it' videos, I wanted to take a moment to share some more truly foundational wisdom from our archives. So, before we start Series 5, we will be sharing more "Gold from the Vaults," and there is no better place to start than with another enlightening episode from my dear friend and a giant in the world of eco-agriculture, the late Jerry Brunetti.

Jerry was a man who spoke with an earthy, profound knowledge of the nature of things. He wasn't just an animal stockman; he was a philosopher of the soil who understood that the health of the plant, the animal, and the human are all part of a single, interconnected cycle. In this session, Jerry challenges the modern agricultural paradigm that has led to dairy cow longevity plummeting to fewer than 2 lactations. He argues that we have traded wellness care for disease management, and it is costing us our farms and our health.

The Reductionist Trap and the Farmacy of the Future

Jerry begins by highlighting the danger of "reductionist" thinking—the tendency to take things apart until we lose sight of the whole. In modern medicine, specialists often fail to communicate, leading to a system that manages symptoms rather than fosters wellness. The same has happened on our farms. We have agronomists who don't understand the rumen and nutritionists who don't understand the soil food web.

Jerry’s prophecy is simple yet staggering: the pharmacies of the future will be farms. He notes that in the US, the healthcare and agricultural systems are nearly equal in cost—over a trillion dollars each. This isn't a coincidence. When our food is incapable of sustaining life, we must rely on pharmaceuticals to survive. The shift back to "Nutrition Farming" isn't just an economic choice; it's a necessity for the survival of mankind.

Manureology: The Stockman’s First Clue

One of the most practical segments of this talk involves what Jerry calls "manureology." He suggests that an animal is only as healthy as its digestion. By using a simple colander and a jet stream of water to wash manure, a farmer can see exactly what the animal is—and isn't—digesting. If you see whole grains or excessive fibre, the "microbial bridge" is broken.

He also dives into the critical importance of pH. While blood pH must stay at a strict 7.4 for survival, the body will cannibalise its own minerals or use toxic ammonia to maintain that balance. By monitoring the pH of urine and manure, we can identify "acidosis" long before it becomes a clinical disaster.

You’ll also discover:

  • The historical connection between mineral-rich "Apatite" soils and the physical robustness of humans and bison.
  • Why ruminants are architecturally designed for forage, not grain, and the role of "enzyme inhibitors" in seeds.
  • The "funny protein" problem: How high-nitrogen fertilisers create forage that looks good on paper but acts as a metabolic poison.
  • The role of the liver in converting toxic ammonia into urea and the rising issue of "Milk Urea Nitrogen" (MUN) in modern dairying.
