Welcome back to Episode 12 of Series 3 of the “How To Do It” video series.

This week, we’re going to explore something truly fascinating – a largely invisible kingdom that holds the key to soil health, plant resilience, and even planetary healing.

I’m talking about fungi.

Now, when we think of fungi, many of us picture mushrooms in a paddock or maybe something unwelcome in the fridge. But behind the scenes, this remarkable group of organisms is orchestrating some of the most critical processes in nature.

Take Paul Stamets, for example – the world’s most well-known mycologist. He’s discovered over 237 new species of fungi and helped bring mainstream attention to their extraordinary potential. You can hear more of his journey in the wonderful documentary Fantastic Fungi – but today, I want to shine a light on why this matters for farmers and gardeners.

Did you know that fungi are the primary decomposers of organic matter? They’re also responsible for building stable humus, delivering nutrients to plants, detoxifying the soil, and even protecting crops from disease.

In fact, there’s a group of these hidden helpers – called mycorrhizal fungi – that form symbiotic relationships with over 90% of all plants. They act like extensions of the root system, expanding access to phosphorus, zinc, copper and water, often reducing the need for external inputs.

Unfortunately, many modern farming practices – including excessive tillage, synthetic fungicides, and certain fertilisers – are disastrous for fungi. Most agricultural soils today are bacterially dominant, and we’ve forgotten how to nurture the fungal half of the soil food web.

In this episode, I’ll explain why you need to tip the balance back in favour of fungi, and how to do just that using practical, on-farm strategies – including compost teas, bio-priming, and simple techniques to boost your fungal counts.
